Legal Services For The Poor
Rich or poor, every people have the responsibility to abide to the law b that the government imposes. Everyone has the right to be protected in times of prosecution especially against charges that can significantly change his or her life. The importance of being properly represented during these legal situations is a basic right of every individual. As much as possible, the laws should be unbiased when deciding the best course of action for a legal case.
However, several instances often result to being well off the rights and privileges. Most of these cases involve those people who lack the funds to continue legal proceedings or much worse, do not have the capacity to avail legal services. Many of these impoverished citizens usually do not receive the right compensation especially during personal injury cases as well as property damages.
To address this significant concern about the welfare of the underprivileged people, the government has several programs that effectively provide professional lawyers for their legal needs. In the US, the Congress established the Legal Services Corporation through their collective efforts in passing the LSC Act of 1974. This non-profit organization provides legal benefits to low-income individuals and equal rights from the justice system. Its main objective is to provide top quality legal assistance and services to people that cannot afford the legal counsel they need for their case.

The Legal Services Corporation gives the sufficient legal assistance to low-income citizens and addresses the civil issues that involve indigent citizens. However, the process of providing free legal services is not directly to the individuals in need. Instead, most of the help that the LSC provides come from grants approved by the legal services programs all over the country. Most of these local legal services gather funds from the state government as well as from private sectors.
The eligibility to the services provided by the legal services programs follows the income guidelines that the LSC imposes. The guidelines set the qualification rules according to the maximum income level of the people availing the free legal services. The individual's income should also correspond to the Federal Poverty Guidelines in order to be approved by the LSC.
The organization accommodates almost everyone within the bracket set by the Federal Poverty Guidelines. There are no racial, ethnic or even age preferences when it comes to the individuals eligible to the free legal services. Most of the clients in the program include low-income workers, veterans, victims of natural disasters and disabled citizens.
The benefits provided by the local legal services programs include lawyer representation and legal support during the proceedings. The LSC provides legal services for welfare problems, concerns on family law, housing issues and consumer protection issues. Free legal assistance is also provided for victims of domestic violence, tenants, senior citizens and veterans. However, statistics show that only two percent of the underprivileged population is attended by the legal services of the organization. The campaign for equal justice for the poor would even be a difficult task with the increasing number of citizens facing hardships due to the economic crisis.
